Textured crochet cowl pattern

This crochet cowl pattern was one for all senses. I bought the Caron Tea cake Yarn for it’s squishiness, used my wooden bamboo hook for an organic, earthy feel and made a bumpy variation of the half double crochet stitch for texture.

Our sense of touch is one of the most powerful ways we connect with the world. Feeling different textures—like soft, squishy yarn, smooth wooden crochet hooks, or richly textured fabric—can be deeply soothing and grounding. These gentle sensory experiences help calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and bring our attention into the present moment. The simple act of working with comforting materials can spark creativity and create small moments of joy that add up to greater overall happiness.

Materials needed to make the textured chunky crochet cowl pattern

One Cake of Bulky Weight Yarn (Caron Tea Cake in Winter Berry)

Size 9.00 mm / US size M. I normally love my jumbo Clover Hooks, but for this yarn, I preferred using a bamboo hook. The organic material feels good in my hand. Don’t forget

The chunky crochet cowl measures 26” x 10.5” but can be customized easily to fit your preference! I used an awesomely simple but somehow cleverly textured stitch that gave my fabric a knit look because it is worked in the round. Chunky yarn lends itself to simple and straight forward stitches, don’t you think?

End all Rounds by making the last st into the same st as joining the last Round, slst into the second st of the Round and start the next Round with a ch 1, PS into the next st. This method helps conceal your Round ends and works for any hdc or dc crochet projects in the round! See this post to learn more about this invisible seam!

Pattern Stitch is a variation of the half double crochet stitch. You will yo, pull through the st AND pull through the first lp on your hook. This gives your stitch a little “bump” in the front and is wonderfully textured when you use a bulky weight yarn.
